Marines contribute to the San Diego economy in a new way
By: Brittnie NerkinsSan Diego once based its economy on the military, but has now diversified to draw revenue from various industries. In the wake of the recession, however, San Diego is again relying on the military to boost its economy – but now for the tourists it draws.
The Marine Corps Recruit Depot hosts boot camp graduations. In each ceremony, about 400 men officially become Marines, drawing about 1,200 guests, while the events during the summer increase to about 500 graduates, drawing a crowd of about 1,500 guests. San Diego’s economy reaps the benefit of the increased tourism that the graduations attract.
