San Diego tourism business declines 12 to 14 percent

By: Kristina Blake
In comparison with other major western destinations like Phoenix, Vegas, Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Francisco, tourism to San Diego has fared well. Only San Francisco has generated more money. Still, business in the area has decreased 12 to 14 percent because of the poor economy. Officials hope a new California Welcome Center in East County will help generate more business by drawing visitors to local hotels and attractions. Currently, there’s two visitor centers in downtown San Diego and La Jolla. The new Alpine center is similar to the Oceanside location, another official state welcome center.
